Research

Research is an important mandate of the Royal University of Bhutan. One of the objectives of the RUB reflected in the Royal Charter states that the University is “to promote and conduct research, to contribute to the creation of knowledge in an international context and to promote the transfer of knowledge of relevance to Bhutan.” Research is an integral part of the higher learning and provides opportunity for experiential learning for both faculty and students. It would make the teaching-learning process more effective and enhance the quality of education.

Some of the benefits of research works include the following:

  1. Generate new knowledge for the benefit of society
  2. Find solutions to specific problems faced by the nation and help the policy makers to make informed decisions
  3. Academic activity becomes challenging, intellectually stimulating; faculties become highly motivated and knowledgeable
  4. Faculties develop a habit of critical enquiry while maintaining the currency of knowledge
  5. Provide an opportunity for collaborative research activity both within and outside the university system including international institutions
  6. Faculties would have opportunities to engage in an intellectual discourse and also gain recognition for their work through presentation of their findings at national or international seminars or symposia.

Organisational Structure Of The Research System

The Department of Research and External Relations of the RUB coordinates and consolidates the research activities within the university system. The Department is supported by the Research and Innovation Committee (RIC), with representations from all the member colleges. The RIC members liaise between the RUB and member college on research related matters.

At the college level the College Research Committee (CRC) coordinates the research works. One of the primary roles of the CRC is to organize the Annual Research Review and Planning Workshop at the college. What the RIC does at the University level, the CRC does at the college level.

CNR Research Vision

To become a leading institution in the region for research and education in rural development and renewable natural resource management.

Mission

The CNR research mission is to carry out research that would contribute towards the national efforts in sustainable food production, renewable natural resource management, poverty alleviation, and improvement in the standard of living and the quality of life.

Objectives of CNR research

  1. To generate new knowledge
  2. To find solutions to problems related to Agriculture
  3. To contribute towards the ongoing search for solutions to problems in the area of natural resource management.

CNR Research Strategy:

Until now the College of Natural Resources did not have coordinated research mainly because when CNR was as CNR under the Ministry of Agriculture, research was not so much the mandate. This does not mean that research was not conducted at the institute. CNR has been actively participating in some research in the livestock sector. After joining the Royal University of Bhutan, research has come as a mandate. Towards fulfilling the research mandate, the CNR has developed a draft CNR Research Policy and Strategy which was discussed at the first Research Review and Planning Workshop held on July 2, 2007.  The workshop reviewed the research vision, strategy and objectives and formulated a plan of action to formalize the college’s research effort. Thus the process of identifying research topic by the faculty has begun. From this year, research budget provisions will be kept to facilitate faculty research.
